Q: Is it permissible for a female to be seen by a male gynecologist?
A. It is necessary that a Muslim lady sees a female Muslim doctor if such is available. If there is no Muslim female doctor, or if such a doctor is not competent or experienced enough to render treatment, then she should visit a female non-Muslim doctor.
In the absence of such a doctor, or due to the above-mentioned reasons a female doctor is not an option, then only could a male doctor may be seen.
Since the woman is in the presence of a Ghayr Mahram man (the doctor), the husband should always be present, regardless of the type of examination being conducted. The type of examination is irrelevant; the purpose of the husband’s presence is to avoid her being alone with a Ghayr Mahram.
