Q: Is it advisable for a son to do istikhara to get married to a certain girl about whom the son’s mother is not happy?
A: If the mother has good reasons for not approving of this girl, such as she being a bad girl or one with bad habits, then there is no question of making istikhara, because then it is clear that he should not marry her.
However, if the girl has got good habits, is pious, observes hijaab, then the son can make istikhara and report the result of the istikhara to his mother.
Judgement of how good a girl is must not be based on the boy’s personal contact with her, because infatuation and external, superflous love can make young people imagine something contary to reality. Rather find out the girl’s character from senior and elderly people in the community.
