Non Muslim Staff and Juma Trading

Q: We have a few fitment centres across the country. Most stores are run by Muslim and non Muslim staff . During the time of Jumuah all Muslim staff are given time off for prayers. 90% of the staff are non Muslim. Should we stop trading completely, even where we do not have any Muslim staff ? Please note stores which are run by Muslim staff are closed.

A: Jumu’ah is from the salient features of Islam and must be given its due respect and reverence. By respecting the salient features of Islam, Allah will grant honour and blessings.

Allah Ta’aala says in the Qur’aan in Surah Jumu’ah:

يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا إِذَا نُودِيَ لِلصَّلَاةِ مِنْ يَوْمِ الْجُمُعَةِ فَاسْعَوْا إِلَى ذِكْرِ اللَّهِ وَذَرُوا الْبَيْعَ ذَلِكُمْ خَيْرٌ لَكُمْ إِنْ كُنْتُمْ تَعْلَمُونَ

O YOU WHO BELIEVE, WHEN THE CALL FOR SALAAH IS PROCLAIMED ON FRIDAY, HASTEN TO THE REMEMBRANCE OF ALLAH AND LEAVE OFF TRADE. THAT IS MUCH BETTER FOR YOU, IF YOU BUT KNOW.

Once the first Athaan commences, all trade should be stopped and a Muslim will proceed for the Jumu’ah Salaah. This applies to a person upon whom Jumu’ah is compulsory.

If out of reverence a person closes his business, it will be best. However, if non Muslim staff is left to run the business during Salaah time, the income is valid and no sin has been incurred.

Allah Ta’aala knows best.
