Status of the Green Dome

Q: What is the Islamic ruling regarding the green dome above the blessed grave of the Prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam in Madinah?

A: Your query refers. When Rasoolullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam (May our lives and the lives of our children and parents be sacrificed for him!) passed away he was buried right at the very spot where his Sacred Body lay, and that was the room of Hazrat Ayesha Radhiyallahu anha. That was the law that applied to all Ambiya, that they must be buried where they die. Centuries later, when enemies of Islam tried to dig through and open the Blessed Grave, the Kings of that time built a wall of lead and stone around that room or chamber where the Nabi of Allah was interred. Later on a Dome was erected over it. That Dome covers part of the Musjid as well. So we will consider the Dome as being built over the musjid, not necessarily over the Qabr only. And because the Qabr cannot be shifted, for that will be a greater sin, the Dome also remains in place. So one cannot say that a tomb was erected over the Mubaarak Raudha. It will be said that the Nabi of Allah sallallahu alaihi wa sallam was buried inside a building, and not that a building was erected AFTER his burial. The only thing that happened was that the building was reinforced for protection, which was absolutely necessary

There is, therefore, nothing wrong with having the Dome there. Furthermore, assuming the Ulema of today rule that the Dome should not be there in the first place, to break it down now would be highly disrespectful to the Mubaarak and Sacred Body of OUr Rasool Sallallahu alayhi wasallam. All the Ulema of the Ummat over the last fourteen centuries had not objected to or ruled against the existence of the Green Dome. That itself is enough reason for us to believe that there is nothing wrong with having the Dome over the Raudha At-har.

And Allah Ta’ala knows best
